The dance between mind and body can be very beautiful if done so with awareness and intention. It is very common in the world today to be completely lost in the mental tasks of the day and to ignore the more subtle language of the body. By utilizing breath work, postures and deep presence we can begin to befriend our bodies and learn to hear the language of our psyche.
Yoga can be a very healing practice and can be used to create union between mind and body. By allowing attention to be on the breath, a sense of calm can arise in the body as the mind begins to settle. I have found this practice to be very helpful in the treatment of anxiety, stress, trauma and depression.
As we move through life, we often disconnect from our bodies and lose sight of how deeply we are affected by what goes on around us. Eventually, we will get messages, warning signals or symptoms that remind us that we must do something about the way we are living our life. Postures (Asanas) and breath work (Pranayama) can not only help with these symptoms, but they can also awaken us to the deeper levels of our body and psyche. Moving through the postures with an awareness and focus can illuminate the process by which our body and mind speak to each other.
Trauma can be a major factor leading to disconnection from the body. Utilizing deep presence and movements that allow the true feeling of sensations in the body to emerge, can aid in opening up channels of energy that have been blocked by extremely painful events. Sharing these experiences can transform the pain and often offer a new perspective, creating space for healing to begin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you actually use Yoga in your sessions?
This is a very important and often asked question. Yoga can be strange and awkward for those unfamiliar with the practice. After taking some time to examine your concerns, needs and symptoms, we can begin to introduce different aspects of the practice that fit with your situation. Pranayama or breath work is a key component to yoga and I use it often to allow clients to get in touch with the more subtle aspects of the body and to begin to regulate the nervous system. Asanas or postures are also used as a meditative tool to dig deeper into a clients internal experience. This process looks different for each individual and over the course of the first few sessions we can begin to develop a plan that works best for you and your unique needs.
